Hospice Nurses Are Already Using AI. The Question Is: Which AI Are They Using?

by | Sep 25, 2026 | Audit & Compliance

AI is already being used in Hospice, whether organizations have officially adopted it or not. Hospice Nurses have figured out what the rest of us have: AI can be an incredibly useful tool. It can help organize thoughts, clean up writing, save time, and make a long day a little easier.

The problem isn’t that Hospice Nurses are using AI. The problem is that we may not know which AI they’re using or what information they’re feeding it.

Think about a Hospice Nurse who has been in the field all day and still has documentation to finish. It would be very easy to copy information from a visit into a consumer AI tool and ask it to help clean up the note. Someone else might use AI to help write a message to a family or review documentation to see what might be missing. They’re not trying to do anything wrong. They’re trying to get their work done and get home.

But Hospice isn’t a normal business. We’re dealing with protected patient information, Medicare requirements, eligibility, clinical documentation, audits, and payment. Using the wrong AI tool, especially when patient information is involved, can create a problem very quickly.

I don’t believe the answer is simply telling Hospice Nurses not to use AI. That ship has sailed. AI is here; people know how useful it can be, and its use will only grow. The better question is: How do we give Hospice Nurses the benefits of AI in an environment designed for the work they’re actually doing?

That’s the reason we built DAHN.

DAHN was built specifically for Hospice and is HIPAA compliant. More importantly, it wasn’t created by a technology company that decided Hospice looked like a good market. It was built by Shelley Henry, RN , a Hospice Nurse with more than 25 years of Hospice and compliance experience and the founder of The Amity Group, Inc.

That experience matters. At The Amity Group, we work exclusively in Hospice, and our Chart Auditing Division reviews Hospice Documentation every day. We see the problems that appear in the charts. We see Hospice Documentation that doesn’t support what happened at the bedside, important information missing, and how something that may seem small can become a much bigger issue when a chart is reviewed.

And the stakes are getting higher. CMS oversight continues to change; Hospice Documentation continues to receive scrutiny; and reputable Hospices are being asked to prove that the medical record supports eligibility, the care provided, and the decisions made. At the same time, AI is moving faster than almost any policy or regulation can keep up with it.

That’s why I think trying to keep AI out of Hospice is the wrong conversation to have. We should be talking about how to use it responsibly, how to protect patient information, and how to give Hospice Nurses tools that actually understand Hospice.

That’s what we’ve done with DAHN. We’re taking decades of Hospice experience, compliance knowledge, and what we’ve learned from reviewing real Hospice Documentation and putting that experience behind an AI tool built specifically for this industry.

Your Hospice Nurses will use AI. Let’s give them one built for Hospice.
